Abstract
Recently, there has been increased number of conservation surgery for the treatment of supraglottic carcinoma. This conservative surgery has theoretical merits of preservation of laryngeal phonatory function with maintenance of cure rates of
total
layngectomy. However, there remains concerns about deglutition difficulty in successful performance of conservative laryngeal surgery.
We herein evaluated factors to predict successful deglutition, such as age, surgical method, extent of surgery(removal of arytenoid, aryepiglottic fold, pyriform sinus, hyoid bone, etc), neck dissection, cricopharyngeal myotomy following
conservation
layngeal surgery for supraglottic carcinoma. And our results showed that standard supraglottic laryngectomy with preservation of arytenoid predicted good for deglutition function after surgery. (Korean J Otolaryngol 39 : 1, 1996)
